Last year, TCC held monthly crochet challenges that were super fun to watch. I didn't participate in any for various reasons. This year, since one of my resolutions is to crochet more items for myself, I figured I'd spend the first day of the year doing just that.
This month's challenge is this awesome hat! It's the Women's Peaked Hat. It's a free pattern you can find on yarnspirations.com. Another great site. To be very honest, I had seen this pattern before through Ravelry and Pinterest. I'd saved the pattern but hadn't attempted it since it's directions were a little intimidating for me. So, when I found out that the first challenge was this hat, I jumped on board! This year is kicking off with a new challenge. I follow "The Crochet Crowd" on Facebook and YouTube. They're a great community of "hookers" that is a safe, supportive place to share creativity and learn from each other. I really enjoy The Crochet Crowd.
This hat is much easier than I thought. However there are a few things you should know. If you tend to stitch tightly, you'll need to either go up in size for your hook or use a denser yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver's Ombre Shades of Cafe for mine and kept the hook size. It fits just fine but I like my hats a little roomy so next time I may also increase the hook size as well.
Buttons Buttons Who's Got The Buttons! This pattern calls for 2 identical buttons. The brim is pulled back and pinned with the buttons to create the visor part. I didn't have any big enough or matching to finish off my hat so I actually made my buttons from polymer clay. It was pretty easy and match perfectly with my color scheme.

The top of the hat is fairly flat. The spokes are not hard to create with the instructions found on The Crochet Crowd's video tutorial on YouTube. This is a very fun pattern. You'll find it goes very fast once you've finished the top section.

You can see here fro the side that the pattern is really visually appealing. Throw in some color changes and a set of fancy buttons and this hat could be amazing! The clusters make for a very soft and warm hat while being pretty lightweight.
As my first official project of the year, I'm pretty excited that it came out as well as it did. I'm pretty confident that the next version of this hat that I do will be even better knowing now what I know about the sizing. I've already challenged others to pick up their hooks and give it a go. Try it out! You may be surprised how great it turns out!
