WHAT IS A GRAPHGHAN?
Simply put, it's a cross between a graph and an afghan. Crocheting an afghan is time consuming but can result in some beautifully crafted items. Most traditional afghans are however, more focused on the stitch work. In a graphghan, you're using primarily the single crochet stitch and switching yarn colors to create an image, kind of like pixels. Each stitch represents a square on the graph, resulting in a fairly easy pattern and almost always an amazing wow worthy piece in the end.
HOW DO I START?
Probably the hardest part for me was actually deciding on an image. It's kind of time consuming because for me, it meant really looking at images and then realizing just how much yarn it would take. The different colors I would need and honestly, I became overwhelmed before I even started! Once I decided on a 2 color simple image I felt much better continuing. Please realize, there will be a lot of work involved so be ready to dedicate some time and some yarn to this project. It's not a 1 skein type thing. We're talking a few skeins over the course of a few weeks if you're as busy as most people are!
HOW DO I MAKE MY PATTERN?
Once you've got your mind made up on an image, it's time to really get to the nitty gritty of this process. I haven't the time to begin with so I'm working with something simple but with great meaning to me. In this example, I'm using the Assassin's Creed logo. Ubisoft's hit franchise is a big part of our lives. My
husband and I love the games and are highly anticipating the live action movie that has been rumored! The logo is public domain so it is available to the public to manipulate. This means I love working with it.
There are tons of websites on the internet that will make the graph for you after a quick upload of your chosen image and then manipulating a few settings to meet your needs. I've used a few but the one site that I've found that is exceptional at it is www.stitchboard.com.
The pattern I created on the site included a very detailed pictured graph with a very well laid out pattern as well as the actual written pattern giving me clear instructions on what colors to use when and it's in the traditional "rows" format. Much easier than a graph I'm sure for some. It's free to be a member and you get access to some pretty neat things. Give it a go! I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
I hope you found some of the info in this post helpful and you're welcome to use the image provided for your pattern. I would have made the actual pattern available but the site's policies didn't allow it. Good thing it's free! You can custom make it yourself! Happy Hooking!
